How to Register (Homologate) Your Phone in Chile So It Doesn't Get Blocked

Congratulations! You’ve finalized your plans for a semester abroad in Valparaíso, Chile. Whether you are studying at  PUCV (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso), UV (Universidad de Valparaíso), UTFSM (Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María), UPLA (Universidad de Playa Ancha), UAI (Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez), etc., your classes are selected and your housing is settled, so you're ready to explore the colorful, winding cerros of Chile’s most bohemian city.

If you plan to bring your phone from home and pop in a local Chilean SIM card (Entel, Movistar, WOM) or eSIM, this guide is for you. Reading this now—before or just after you arrive—will save you the stress of waking up to a sudden "No Service" notification when you need your phone the most.



WHAT IS "HOMOLOGACIÓN" AND WHY IS IT HAPPENING?


In Chile, the government maintains a regulatory system called Multibanda/SAE (Homologación de Celulares). It has two main goals:


  1. Safety: It ensures every phone connected to a Chilean network can receive emergency SAE alerts (used for earthquake or tsunami notifications).

  2. Security: It tracks device IMEIs to ensure phones were not stolen and comply with local technical standards.


The moment you insert a Chilean SIM card or eSIM into a phone bought abroad, the local network will detect that your device is "unregistered". You will receive an automated text message warning you that you have 30 days to register (homologar) your device. If you ignore it, your phone will be software-blocked from all Chilean mobile networks.



THE 3 KEY RULES YOU NEED TO KNOW


  • The 30-Day Countdown: Once you activate a Chilean SIM, you have 30 days before the network block occurs.

  • The Foreigner Grace Period: As an international exchange student, you have a 120-day grace period from the date of entry stamped on your passport.

  • It’s 100% FREE: Registration is completely free for one personal device per person per year. Do not pay any third-party website asking for a "registration fee"—those are scams.



HOW TO REGISTER YOUR DEVICE (STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE)


You do not need to hunt for a phone store in the Plan (city center) to do this. In fact, most students find it much easier to complete online from their laptop using Wi-Fi.


STEP 1 FIND YOUR IMEI NUMBER

Your IMEI is your phone's unique international fingerprint.

  • Open your phone dialer and type *#06#.

  • A 15-digit number will pop up on your screen. Take a screenshot of this. You will need it for the form.


STEP 2 PREPARE YOUR DOCUMENTS

Before opening the registration portal, have digital copies (photos or PDFs) of:

  1. Your Passport: The main photo ID page.

  2. Proof of Entry: Your entry stamp in your passport or your digital arrival slip (PDI).

  3. The IMEI Screenshot: The screenshot you took in Step 1.


STEP 3 CHOOSE AN OFFICIAL CERTIFICATION COMPANY

You must register through an official Empresa Certificadora authorized by Subtel (Chilean Telecom Ministry). You can view the full list at the official government portal: multibanda.cl/ia/.

Popular, reliable free portals for international students include:

  • Movistar Homologación Portal

  • Samsung Homologación Portal

  • Apple Certificadoras (if applicable)


Note: You do not need to be a customer of these companies to use their free registration service. For example, you can use Samsung’s portal even if you own an iPhone.


STEP 4 SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

  1. Visit the homologation portal of your chosen company.

  2. Fill in your personal details (Full Name, Passport Number, Email).

  3. Enter your 15-digit IMEI number exactly as shown on your screenshot.

  4. Upload your passport photo, proof of entry stamp, and IMEI screenshot.

  5. Submit. You will receive a confirmation email with a tracking number. Keep this email!



PRO-TIPS FOR YOUR SEMESTER IN VALPARAÍSO


  • The eSIM Alternative: If you haven't left home yet, consider an international eSIM (like Airalo or Holafly) for data roaming during your first few days.

  • WhatsApp is King in Chile: In Chile, WhatsApp is used for everything—from contacting your university to messaging your landlord. Even if your SIM undergoes a brief "No Service" approval period, keep WhatsApp connected via Wi-Fi.

  • Don't Panic if Blocked: If you miss the 30-day deadline and get blocked, your phone is not broken! Simply submit your homologation request online, and once approved, the network automatically unblocks your IMEI within 24 hours.
